1.

Outlets should never be located behind:

  • doors

  • fixtures

  • cabinets

  • appliances

Correct answer: doors

The code states that outlets should not be placed behind any doors, due to the fact that doors are constantly moving and it is not good practice to have the risk of them being hit consistently. The other items may not be practical, but you come across times where they will be needed.

2.

What is the minimum required distance to strap 1" copper?

  • 6 feet

  • 8 feet

  • 4 feet

  • 12 feet

Correct answer: 6 feet

The minimum required distance to strap 1" copper is 6 feet. The code states that any suspended piping must be supported. 8 feet and 12 feet would fall outside of the chart for one inch pipe, and thus would not be an acceptable distance. 4 feet would be accepted by an inspector, but does not meet the minimum required distance description per the code.

See table 313.3.

3.

What size should the bonding wire be?

  • 6 AWG

  • 5 AWG

  • 4 AWG

  • 3 AWG

Correct answer: 6 AWG

The code states that the jumper wire should not be smaller than 6 AWG or equivalent. The smaller in number, the smaller the wire. AWG stands for American Wire Gauge.

4.

Building sewers must be:

  • watertight

  • oversized

  • undersized

  • engineered systems

Correct answer: watertight

The sewer must be tested thoroughly and ensured that it is water tight. The sizing aspects do not apply and the systems that are installed have to be built on site and follow the guidelines of the blueprints but are not directly engineered.

5.

Which of the traps below is not allowed to be installed on a system?

  • S trap

  • P trap

  • Grease trap

  • House trap

Correct answer: S trap

A S trap is one of the traps that are not allowed to be installed on a system. The design of the trap does not fit the code requirements and the weir of the trap blocks the vent.

6.

The vertical drain that receives storm water and discharges it is called the:

  • leader

  • soil stack

  • storm drain

  • roof drain

Correct answer: leader

This terminology is important to remember the difference between storm water and waste water. The soil stack would be the equivalent of a leader but for waste water, not storm water.

7.

Domestic dishwashers must discharge through a(n)                waste.

  • indirect

  • direct

  • disposer

  • grease trap

Correct answer: indirect

The dishwasher must discharge indirectly with the use of an air gap. This can be done with a fitting or through the use of a high loop before tying it into the sink or disposal. A disposal is not required to be installed on a kitchen sink.

8.

What is the point of delivery system for a natural gas system?

  • Meter assembly

  • Regulator

  • Propane tank

  • City line

Correct answer: Meter assembly

The point of use for the natural gas system is considered the meter assembly. This is the standard for all dwellings, both private and commercial.

9.

Which of the following is not an acceptable receptor for a temperature relief valve?

  • Attic drain pan

  • Floor drain

  • Service sink

  • Indirect waste

Correct answer: Attic drain pan

The temperature relief drain line cannot be piped to a receptor that is in the attic. The line must be routed to discharge to a secure point of disposal that is readily observable, like a floor drain, service sink, or indirect waste.

10.

All pipes and drains must be                     when located under an accessible lavatory or sink.

  • insulated

  • secured

  • labeled

  • rigid

Correct answer: insulated

Anytime there is an accessible sink, the water piping and drain piping must be insulated. There are other types of materials that can be used, like protectors or insulators. This is to protect the public from any potential burns.

11.

In regards to rodent control and drain inlets, what is the maximum size the drain grate can allow?

  • 1/2"

  • 3/8"

  • 1"

  • 1/4"

Correct answer: 1/2"

The code states that the drain grate must have a maximum of 1/2" openings in the grate in order to keep rodents from exiting or entering the system.

12.

What is the max height that the standpipe of a clothes washer can be?

  • 30 inches

  • 24 inches

  • 48 inches

  • 18 inches

Correct answer: 30 inches

This distance is determined starting at the weir of the trap, not from the floor. This allows for suds relief in the event that occurs. The minimum distance of the standpipe is 18 inches and the maximum is 30 inches.

13.

vent is a vent that does not receive any discharge of any sewage or waste.

  • dry

  • wet

  • double

  • air admittance

Correct answer: dry

A dry vent should only see air and no water. If there is water in a dry vent, then there are some failures or backups in the system. A wet vent removes solids and waste but the ventilation of the system is provided by a dry vent.

The wet, double, and the AAV (Air Admittance Valve) are not suitable options in the scenario above.

14.

Gas pressure regulators must be                     against any physical damage.

  • protected

  • secured

  • avoided

  • installed

Correct answer: protected

Anytime a gas regulator is installed, it must be protected from any potential physical damage.

15.

An eyewash is required to have which of the following?

  • Clear signage

  • Drain

  • Hot water

  • Backflow preventer

Correct answer: Clear signage

The eye wash must have clear signage on what it is and where it's located. It does not require a drain but can have one. The code doesn't say that there needs to be hot water. The eye wash also does not need a backflow preventer.

16.

A water heater can only be installed inside of a bathroom or bedroom if it is a:

  • direct vent

  • atmospheric type

  • open combustion

  • sealed combustion

Correct answer: direct vent

It must be a direct vented type of water heater due to the fact that there is no make-up air available in living quarters and bathrooms. Because of this, the venting must be drawn from the exterior of the home. A direct vent may be sealed combustion, but that doesn't mean sealed combustion is a direct vent. Open combustion and atmospheric types are not allowed.

17.

What is the minimum size access panel that should be provided if using a concealed slip joint?

  • 12 inches

  • 2 feet

  • 16 inches

  • 18 inches

18.

Which of the following materials should a bonding jumper connect to?

  • Metallic

  • PVC

  • HDPE

  • PEX

Correct answer: Metallic

The bonding jumper must attach to something metallic. The other items are not metallic and do not meet the code requirements.

19.

Which of the following is best described as a device that threads onto a hose that can provide backflow protection?

  • Hose connection backflow preventer

  • Dual check backflow preventer

  • Pressure vacuum breaker

  • Air gap

Correct answer: Hose connection backflow preventer

Hose thread backflow preventers can be seen on any type of hose bib that doesn't have a vacuum breaker built into the fixture. The other items are not used for hose bib applications.

  • Leaded nickel
  • Bronze
  • Stainless steel
  • ABS
  • PVC
  • Polypropylene
  • Nylon
