141.
According to the stages of learning model, which stage describes a client receiving instructions and being able to, with some mistakes, complete that task?
-
Associative
-
Cognitive
-
Autonomic
-
Auditory
Correct answer: Associative
Someone is in the associative stage of learning when they are able to take an instruction and perform the task asked of them. It is possible they may not fully remember every aspect of the exercise, but they will have an understanding of the basics.
142.
For a participant with a balance disorder, which of the following exercises would pose the greatest risk of injury?
-
Crunches on a Swiss ball
-
Wall squats
-
Seated shoulder press
-
Kneeling band pull aparts
Correct answer: Crunches on a Swiss ball
While this exercise may pose the greatest injury risk of the items listed, this does not necessarily mean that it needs to be avoided. People with balance disorders can benefit greatly from exercises on unstable surfaces. The GEI just needs to make sure that these exercises are always done in a safe manner, with a competent spotter, etc.
143.
What is an appropriate cardiovascular test that should be administered prior to starting group fitness classes?
-
3-minute step test
-
Timed 1-mile run
-
Partial curl-up test
-
Push-up test
Correct answer: 3-minute step test
The 3-minute step test is a quick, simple test that requires minimal equipment and space to administer. It is not too challenging that most people cannot complete it. However, it will be difficult if the student has preexisting cardiovascular and/or musculoskeletal diagnoses.
While the 1-mile run is a cardiovascular test, it is not appropriate for entry into a group fitness class. It is not possible to standardize this test, as many gyms will not have access to a track, treadmill, or ideal weather conditions, among other factors.
The partial curl-up test is a muscular endurance test, not a cardiovascular test.
The push-up test is also an example of a muscular endurance test.
144.
Which of the following teaching methods incorporates techniques that would appeal to all three of the most common learning styles?
-
Demonstrating certain movements, providing a verbal, detailed description of certain movements, and encouraging participants to try and "feel" certain movements themselves in order to learn them
-
Using a loud speaker to describe the movements, giving verbal feedback to certain participants one-on-one, and demonstrating the movements
-
Placing posters on the walls of the gym describing the movements, playing looped videos demonstrating the movements, and the GEI demonstrating the movements herself
-
Providing tactile feedback to certain participants while they perform movements, demonstrating movements, and encouraging participants to "feel" certain movements
Correct answer: Demonstrating certain movements, providing a verbal, detailed description of certain movements, and encouraging participants to try and "feel" certain movements themselves in order to learn them
This option would help visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners throughout the course of a class.
Using a loud speaker to describe the movements, giving verbal feedback to certain participants one-on-one, and demonstrating the movements: This answer would appeal only to auditory and visual learners, not kinesthetic.
Placing posters on the walls of the gym describing the movements, playing looped videos demonstrating the movements, and the GEI demonstrating the movements herself: This answer would appeal only to visual learners, not kinesthetic or auditory learners.
Providing tactile feedback to certain participants while they perform movements, demonstrating movements, and encouraging participants to "feel" certain movements: This answer would appeal only to visual learners and kinesthetic learners.

A group exercise participant wants to lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks. Which of the following would be the best way for this participant to achieve this goal?
-
This participant should consume 500 fewer calories per day, leading to a pound of weight loss per week
-
This person should consume 1000 fewer calories per day, leading to a pound of weight loss per week
-
This person should attempt to burn 1000 calories through exercise per day, leading to a pound of weight loss per week
-
This participant should consume only 500 calories per day, leading to a pound of weight loss per week
Correct answer: This participant should consume 500 fewer calories per day, leading to a pound of weight loss per week
There are roughly 3500 calories in a pound of fat. Therefore, by eating 500 fewer calories per day, for 7 days, an individual would be expected to lose roughly a pound.
Eating in an extreme caloric deficit, attempting to exercise too much, and eating extremely restrictive diets are often the worst ways to lose weight.
146.
Which muscle action describes the muscle lengthening as it contracts?
-
Eccentric
-
Concentric
-
Isometric
-
Isokinetic
Correct answer: Eccentric
Eccentric contractions occur when the force of the load is greater than the force of the effort. When completing the concentric portion of a bicep curl, the elbow must extend in order to finish the movement. To ensure the weight doesn’t quickly drop, a force less than the force of the dumbbell must be exerted in order to slowly lower the weight.
Concentric contractions refer to the muscle shortening as it contracts. For this to happen, the muscle must produce a force greater than the force being placed on it.
Isometric contractions occur when the force of the muscle is equal to the force being placed on it. This can also happen when agonist and antagonist muscles are contracted at the same time. A good example is contracting the bicep brachii and tricep brachii at the same time. The elbow joint will neither flex nor extend.
Isokinetic refers to the velocity of the contraction remaining constant throughout the joint’s ROM regardless of the force produced. Special equipment is typically required in order to reproduce this.
147.
Which of the following is an example of a motivation cue?
-
"Push yourself to the limit!"
-
"For the grapevine, we'll start moving to the right."
-
"Keep your back flat while you squat to reduce the chances of injury."
-
"Place your hands beneath your shoulders during the pushup and attempt to push the floor away from you."
Correct answer: "Push yourself to the limit!"
Motivation cues are intended to set the tone for the group fitness class. Technique/safety cues are intended to ensure that participants know how to effectively perform the movements without risk of injury. Movement cues indicate when and what movements are coming up next.
"For the grapevine...." is an example of a movement cue. "Keep your back flat..." and "Place your hands beneath your shoulders..." are examples of safety/technique cues.
148.
Which of the following is a major benefit of circuit training?
-
Circuit training can be an effective way to work on multiple aspects of fitness simultaneously
-
Circuit training classes are always low-impact
-
Circuit training classes do not require an official warm-up or cool-down
-
Circuit training classes are the best way to help clients increase their one-rep max efforts
Correct answer: Circuit training can be an effective way to work on multiple aspects of fitness simultaneously
Circuit training classes often incorporate movements that are designed to improve cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance in a single session.
Circuit training classes may or may not be low-impact. An official warm-up and cool-down is always integral to every type of group fitness class or exercise session. Circuit training classes may help improve muscular strength slightly, but increasing one rep max ability can be more effectively accomplished in other ways.

A GEI is giving a presentation on dietary fat. Which of the following is true regarding the different kinds of fat?
-
Fats can be classified as monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated, or "trans"; with trans fats and saturated fats generally considered to be the least healthy fats
-
Fats are all solid at room temperature, regardless of whether they are saturated, unsaturated, or another classification of fat
-
Fats are all liquid at room temperature, regardless of whether they are saturated, unsaturated, or another classification of fat
-
Fats of all classifications pose equal health risks to humans
Correct answer: Fats can be classified as monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated, or "trans"; with trans fats and saturated fats generally considered to be the least healthy fats
Fats are usually classified by how saturated the molecule is. The classifications include monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated, or trans fats. Each of these (with the exception of trans fats) is generally considered to be safe to consume in small amounts. The basic recommendations are that people consume less than 30% of their calories from fats in general, with less than 10% of those calories coming from saturated fats specifically.
150.
A group exercise instructor tells participants that they can make the front shoulder raise easier by bending their elbows. Which of the following options best explains why this modification makes the exercise easier?
-
The moment arm involved with the movement is shortened, decreasing the torque
-
The force involved with the movement is lessened, decreasing the torque
-
The effect of gravity is lessened through this modification
-
This modification will not make the exercise easier, it will make it harder
Correct answer: The moment arm involved with the movement is shortened, decreasing the torque
Torque is the best way to discuss forces involved with muscle action, such as those seen in weightlifting and exercise. Torque is the product of the moment arm (the perpendicular distance from the line of force to the joint axis) and the force itself. In this example, the moment arm is effectively shortened when the participant bends her elbows, reducing the overall torque. Gravity, force, and all other factors remain the same.
151.
Which of the following is not a risk factor for atherosclerosis?
-
3 days of moderate exercise per week
-
Sedentary lifestyle
-
Hypertension
-
Family history
Correct answer: 3 days of moderate exercise per week
Three days of moderate exercise per week is near the low end of recommended activity. However, it would not be a risk factor. Rather, it would promote a healthy cardiovascular system.
Family history can predispose someone to being more likely to have atherosclerosis, as well as hypertension. This can be accentuated if someone leads a sedentary lifestyle. All of these factors are interconnected and greatly affect each other.
152.
Which type of body composition test is most appropriate for a public gym setting?
-
Bioimpedence
-
DEXA
-
Bod Pod
-
Skinfold calipers
Correct answer: Bioimpedence
The easiest and most appropriate test is a bioimpedance machine. It is not without its faults though. It is much less accurate than either the DEXA or the Bod Pod; being affected by time of day, hydration status, and even menstruation. However, it is a relatively cheap and effective option, and much less invasive than using skinfold calipers.
The DEXA is an X-ray scan that can quantify body fat percentage (BF%), bone mineral density (BMD), fat-free mass (FFM), and fat mass. It is considered the gold standard for body composition tests. However, it is large and expensive, and typically only used in research labs.
The Bod Pod measures air displacement to find BF%.
153.
Which of the following is true of dumbbells in the group exercise setting?
-
It can be logistically challenging to provide heavy weights for all group exercise participants who may want them
-
Most dumbbells available during a group exercise class weigh between 3 and 5 pounds
-
Dumbbells should only be used in isolation, not in combination with other equipment
-
Most participants can comfortably perform a lateral shoulder raise with 20 pound dumbbells. Therefore, this should be the minimum weight available for group exercise classes.
Correct answer: It can be logistically challenging to provide heavy weights for all group exercise participants who may want them
In most group exercise settings, it is extremely difficult to provide very heavy weights for all participants. Therefore, selecting exercises that make use of lighter weights in creative ways is a good way to get around this hurdle.
Dumbbells available during a group exercise class will typically range between 1 and 15 pounds. Dumbbells can be used with many other pieces of equipment, such as benches and balance trainers, where appropriate. A lateral raise with 20 pound dumbbells is extremely difficult for most people.
154.
Which of the following is correct with regard to the 7%, 38%, and 55% communication rule?
-
7% of communication is the actual words we use, 38% of communication is our tone, and 55% of communication is our body language
-
7% of communication is nonverbal, 38% of communication is verbal, and 55% is how well we listen to others
-
7% of communication is verbal, 38% of communication is nonverbal, and 55% of communication deals with the nuances of specific spoken languages
-
7% of communication is verbs and action words, 38% of communication is nouns and proper nouns, 55% of communication is articles and modifiers
Correct answer: 7% of communication is the actual words we use, 38% of communication is our tone, and 55% of communication is our body language
Communication is made up of both verbal and nonverbal components. Interestingly, most of what we communicate to others comes from our tone and our body language rather than the actual words we use when speaking.
155.
Which of the following group classes does not require additional training?
-
HIIT
-
Kickboxing
-
Pilates
-
Yoga
Correct answer: HIIT
Of the following examples, only HIIT does not require additional training.
The ACSM GEI textbook and other resources have ample knowledge to become an effective instructor. However, it does not go in depth on kickboxing, Pilates, yoga, or other specialty classes. These classes require additional skills and experience to be proficient at doing them as well as teaching them.
156.
A kickboxing instructor arrives before the rest of her class to discover that the session will have to take place in a carpeted room due to scheduling conflicts. Which of the following is a major consideration with regard to a carpeted surface during a kickboxing class?
-
Pivoting should be discouraged. Instead, participants should lift up and place their feet in position during kicks.
-
A carpeted surface is the best choice for a kickboxing class. The instructor should incorporate as much lateral movement and as many pivot moves as possible.
-
The instructor should cancel the class due to safety concerns
-
The instructor should teach a yoga class instead
Correct answer: Pivoting should be discouraged. Instead, participants should lift up and place their feet in position during kicks.
Carpet can cause many issues for classes requiring quick movements and changes in direction. The instructor should discourage participants from quick turns, changes in direction, and sharp pivots, so that their shoes don't catch on the carpeted surface.
The instructor doesn't need to cancel the class, she just needs to make enough modifications to ensure safety. Teaching a yoga class would likely result in many drop offs and unhappy clients. Unless the situation is completely unsafe and inappropriate for holding the promised class, the instructor should move forward with whatever modifications are necessary.
157.
Which of the following is not a purpose of the preparticipation health screening process?
-
To diagnose any diseases which may affect an individual's performance during the exercise class
-
To identify individuals who should abstain from exercising in said class due to medical complications
-
To identify clients who might benefit from medically supervised exercise
-
To identify clients who are at high risk of death or complications as a result of the exercise session
Correct answer: To diagnose any diseases which may affect an individual's performance during the exercise class
Preparticipation health screenings do not enable GEIs to diagnose disease. Rather, they provide a quick way of determining a participant's health/risk status before they commence the class in question. Furthermore, these screening questions can help to determine whether or not clients might have a high likelihood of experiencing a cardiac event or other negative health outcome as a result of taking the class.
158.
What is a good exercise to help a pregnant woman deal with back pain due to the hyperlordotic curve developed throughout pregnancy?
-
Bird dogs
-
Burpees
-
Sit-ups
-
Squat jumps
Correct answer: Bird dogs
Bird dogs focus on core stability and balance and have relatively low risk in comparison with the other exercises listed. The weight of the baby shifts the center of gravity anteriorly and forces the lumbar spine into a hyperlordotic curve. Focusing on exercises that improve core stability and endurance will help the expecting mother withstand the added weight.
Burpees are more focused on cardiovascular endurance. Pregnant women should also avoid changing positions too quickly as their blood pressure, in general, is much lower than normal due to hormonal changes. This can cause dizziness and fainting.
Full sit-ups are not recommended for several reasons. Depending on the stage of pregnancy, lying flat on your back can cut off circulation to the vena cava, a large vein that returns blood back to the heart. There is also concern for diastasis recti, a condition where the rectus abdominis muscles separate due to being stretched.
Squat jumps may be too high impact for most expectant mothers and don’t directly strengthen the deep core abdominals.
159.
The use of physioballs during group exercise classes tends to increase the difficulty of an exercise in which of the following ways?
-
Decreasing the stability of the surface the exercise is performed on
-
Providing significant extra resistance
-
Lowering the center of gravity
-
Increasing the base of support
Correct answer: Decreasing the stability of the surface the exercise is performed on
Physioballs are large apparatuses that can be used effectively for nearly every population that attends a group fitness class. They increase the difficulty of an exercise by reducing the stability one would normally have from the ground or other non-moving surface.
Physioballs are generally very light and provide little added resistance. Lowering the center of gravity tends to make exercises easier; physioballs do not inherently lower the center of gravity of a participant or of a movement. Increasing the base of support often makes an exercise easier; stability balls do not inherently increase the base of support of a participant or of a movement.
160.
Which of the following exercises would be most appropriate to include in a kettlebell class for beginners?
-
Two arm kettlebell swings with light weight
-
Kettlebell snatches with heavy weight
-
Single arm kettlebell swings with mid-air hand switches
-
Max effort double kettlebell clean and press
Correct answer: Two arm kettlebell swings with light weight
The kettlebell swing is the most foundational exercise associated with this exercise tool. However, it can be hard to perform the exercise correctly for beginners. Kettlebell classes should encourage light weight and a focus on form for beginners before they advance to more complex movements and heavier weights.
Kettlebell snatches with heavy weight could result in a beginner injuring their shoulder, back, or another area. Mid-air switches require considerable comfort with the kettlebell and would be inappropriate for most beginners. Max effort double kettlebell presses would be very difficult for most beginners, and they may lose form, leading to injury.
